The Markoe family at one point held Coopers as a plantation and had a house at the point. The Markoes originally Marcous were French Huguenauts. The family is descended from a military officer and administrator to Gen. Count Crequy who was one of the two Protestant military leaders in France. When they lost power with the revocation of tolerance they left for the Caribbean, settlng in the British Virgin Islands. A son Abraham moved to St. Croix where the family owned plantations and then some of the family moved to Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Light Horse Cavalry which the Markoes founded still participates in parades took part in the American Revolution. The emblem is thirteen blue and white stripes on a shield. Some accounts of the history of the American flag say it's design was inspired by the earlier Light Horse banner designed by a Markoe.
