I see references to Inverness-shire. Is this the same as the city? There's Inv. county as well, and I've seen Inverness showing as an area on a clan map. Can someone explain/define these?
Inverness is a city; Inverness-shire is the county that derives its name from Inverness. It is fairly large - as Scottish counties go anyway - stretching down south and west from the city of Inverness.
