I am trying to trace my great grandfather. I was told he was born in Ireland about 1841 and then the family moved "back" to Scotland. He came to the US during our Civil War and was naturalized in 1865. He returned to Scotland to bring his wife, Jane (McCrea) and daughters Esther Jane and Mary to Ramey, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania. My great grandfather died in a mining accident on 3 Nov. 1908 in Windber, Somerset County, PA. His tombstone reads: "John McKenry". His obiturary reads: "John McKendrick". Also his age on the tombstone is 67, but the obit says 64. He was Catholic. My great grandmother Jane, however, was NOT catholic.
I have located the family on the 1900 US Census, but that just created more questions. They state to have 10 children, 5 of whom are alive in 1900 and I've only ever known of 3. Also, it states my grandfather, John E. was born in Scotland in 1885. I was always told he was born in PA in 1888.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
