History

The British Virgin Islands are a group of 36 islands east of Puerto Rico, between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean. They are an overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Of the 36 islands, the principal islands that are inhabited are Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, Jost Van Dyke, Peter Islands, and Salt Island. The capital and only town in the group is Road Town located on the southeastern coast of Tortola. The islands were first settled by the Dutch in 1648 and were acquired by England in 1666.
